May 6 Work In-Replacing the deteriorating greenhouse plastic

We recently planned a working event to change the skin on the Grandchildren’s greenhouse (built in 2005, last plastic covering in 2015). The first few days of our planned greenhouse “skin” replacement were windy and it was decided to go ahead with other projects until the wind quieted, and much more was accomplished than just the replacement of the skin. Joseph put together a new planting mix, and we planted tops and replanted many rooted plants in the new mix. Then, we drove to Highway 70 to fulfill our ADOT Adopt a Highway clean up commitment. Finally, on Monday we replaced the Grandchildren’s greenhouse plastic. We hope you will enjoy the pictures below.

Joseph and Akbar are replanting cuttings (Peyote tops cut from roots) into planting mix rich with Church dirt (30% Church clay dirt plus pumice, black lava rock, amendments and other ingredients from older mixes)

The lads helped for a while, with papa Joseph’s guidance.

Mamma Joy is mixing the dirt and pumice blend into usable planting medium.

While the guys walked on the other side of the road from mile marker 327 to 326, Matthew, Annie and Jennifer walked from mile marker 326 to 327.

Many thanks to Austin (in front of 326 sign) and Curtis(beside the 326 sign) for assisting with the HWY clean up and later for making more transplant medium. Thanks also to Forest, Joseph, Jennifer and Akbar. We were all glad to get out of the sun!

On the return drive to the Church we saw many blooming cacti and flowers, like this lovely Cholla.

On Monday morning we got up early and finished removal of the screws retaining the three layers of plastic and prepared to pull down the old plastic.

Three layers of plastic have been smoothly pulled to the ground, and the many infinitesimal particles of shredded plastic are being vacuumed up with a shop vac. A snow like layer of plastic was swept from the inside off the roof.

The new plastic was easily pulled into place and is being secured and snugged at the top with small screws. Sometimes the task at hand requires only a few individuals and it is better for the rest of us, while keeping a watchful eye for potential problems, to get out of the way.

The labor and the heat made for a need to take periodic breaks.

Akbar making sure the new plastic is centered and in good position.

Matthew made sure everyone had the screws, materials and tools they needed to do the job.

All for this Blessed plant

And finally, though this was not part of the working weekend, we assembled Spirit Walk area #5 in the Northwest field.

Akbar, with the assistance of David and Amanda erected the NW canopy and created the Spirit Walk fireplace.
